Message from Editor

We proudly present the latest edition of the International Journal of Environment, Architecture, and Societies (IJEAS), Volume 4, Issue 2 for the year 2024. This issue continues our tradition of exploring diverse topics within the fields of environment, architecture, and societies. Our journal is committed to providing a platform for high-quality research and discussions that span from design, planning, and building technology to urban and settlement studies, history, arts, research, and education.

The theme for this issue is Environmental Futures: Advancing Discourses in Environment, Architecture, and Societies. This theme is particularly timely as it highlights the pressing need for innovative approaches to address the complex challenges facing our built and natural environments. In this issue, we are proud to showcase five meticulously selected articles authored by scholars from Indonesia, Japan, and India. Each article addresses unique aspects of our theme, contributing to a broader understanding of the intersections between environment, architecture, and societies.

The first article examines the spatial transformation of the Tampuk Pinang Pura (TPP) area in Pangkalpinang City, Indonesia, highlighting the challenges of urban governance and the role of public infrastructure in revitalizing socially troubled spaces. The second paper reviews the use of wood as a sustainable construction material, analyzing its potential to reduce CO2 emissions and promote environmental sustainability, while addressing the challenges associated with its use. Another study proposes placemaking strategies for outdoor spaces within Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs), specifically at Rajawali Station in Jakarta, aiming to enhance public space usability and support sustainable urban development. The fourth article explores the role of rural landscapes in the Indonesian independence struggle, through an analysis of Japanese-produced newsreels from 1942-1945, offering a fresh perspective on how these spaces shaped national identity. Lastly, the issue investigates the impact of globalization on contemporary Islamic architecture, focusing on balancing modern functional requirements with the preservation of cultural heritage in religious buildings across various regions.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the authors and for their scholarly contributions, which have enriched this issue and provided new avenues for exploration and discussion. We hope that these articles inspire further research and dialogue within the academic and professional communities.

Enjoy reading!
